Central Copenhagen's oldest and prettiest park, Kongens Have (Royal Gardens) was established in 1606 by Christian IV to provide Rosenborg Slot with a place in which to grow vegetables. The gardens still preserve much of their original layout, with a grid of wide lanes and narrower pathways - though the exact purpose of the seventeen large marble balls which surround the lawns opposite Rosenborg Slot remains a mystery. From the palace, it's a short stroll down to the park's southern entrance on Gothersgade, where two large plinths, topped with gold domes, neatly frame Kavalergangen (The Squire's Lane), originally used as a jousting run. Walk down here to the Hercules Pavilion - there's a small cafe here during the summer and, next door, a novel children's play area complete with large wooden dragons for clambering on. Look out, too, for the statue of a solemn-looking Hans Christian Andersen a couple of hundred metres east of here, towards Kronprinsessegade.
