Summer daily 8.30am-6pm; winter daily 8.30am-4pm. Bus #5, #7, #14, #16, #24, #40, #43, #84, #384 or Nørreport S-Tog. Established on their present site in 1874, the Botanisk Have (Botanical Gardens) occupy the levelled bastions of the old city fortifications - the zigzagging nature of the lakes inside reveals their original function as a protective moat. The gardens boast a small coniferous forest, rock gardens and waterfalls populated by herons, ducks and freshwater terrapins, while two greenhouses hold wonderful collections of citrus fruits, succulents and cacti. The largest is the circular Palmehus (daily 10am-3pm), where massive palms hang lazily in the steamy atmosphere over ponds festooned with waterlilies - a walkway runs around the top of the interior if you want to get up among the treetops. In the wings are collections of some economically and medicinally important plants from the tropics, including spices, cacao, coffee and coconut. Next to the Palmehus, the enthralling Kaktushus (Wed, Sat & Sun 1pm-3pm) contains around a thousand species of cacti and succulents, along with a section featuring over six hundred types of orchids, whose fragrant smells permeate the air.
