Daily 6am-sunset; free. Bus #1, #6, #9 or Osterport S-Tog. Just past Churchillparken are the unmistakable ramparts and moats of Kastellet (The Citadel). Conceived by Christian IV as the key element in the city's defences, the fortress has been occupied by troops since 1660, making it the oldest still-functioning military base in Europe, and it remains the only part of the city's ancient defence system which is still in use. The star-shaped fortress is formed by five grass-covered bastions surrounded by a series of moats; it can be entered via one of two gates - Kongensporten, near Churchillparken to the south, and Norgesporten, at the opposite end near the Little Mermaid - which are linked by a thoroughfare flanked by barracks and storehouses. Due to its secure nature, Kastellet was also used as a prison - the windows in the west wall of the church were bricked-up so that those attending services did not have to look at the detainees in the prison building in front, although small holes were cut through, allowing prisoners to hear the words of the Lord. Kastellet's church hosts free classical music concerts every Sunday at 2pm. Kastellet's principal attraction is the chance for a bracing walk around its bastions and ramparts. Remember that this is still a working military complex - soldiers can be seen practising drill on the cobbled squares and pathways - and some parts are off limits to the public: keep an eye out for the Adgang Forbudt (No Entry) signs.
