Mid-Aug to May daily 10am-5pm; 20kr; www.denfrie.dk . Bus #1, #6, #9 or Osterport S-Tog. A rather strange-looking wooden building directly opposite Osterport station, at the northern tip of Nyboder, Den Frie Udstilling (The Free Exhibition) is the place to check out Denmark's budding young artists - note though that it's "free" as in free space rather than free entry. The exhibition hall was built in 1898 by an artists' collective looking for a place to exhibit and sell their work - the same collective still runs the hall today. Many of the big names of Danish art, such as Asger Jorn and Christian Lemmerz, have exhibited here at various times, but the exhibitions, as you might expect, can vary dramatically in quality. The building itself is virtually unchanged since 1898, with creaky old wooden floors and natural light spilling in through the glass roof - a great exhibition space, though unfortunately the greenhouse effect created by the roof makes it too hot to be used in high summer.
