Bus #1, #6 or #29. At the southern end of Højbro Plads is Gammel Strand ("Old Beach"), adorned with an equestrian statue of the founder of Copenhagen, Bishop Absalon, positioned on the spot where he is presumed to have first sighted Slotsholmen, site of his future castle. The statue, by Wilhelm Bissen, dating from 1901, was criticized for its aggressive portrayal of Absalon - perched on a rearing charger, he looks more like a warrior than a man of the church - though the plinth, by Martin Nyrop, was much praised; some critics even suggested that horse and rider be removed, leaving the plinth alone to stand as more worthy memorial to the bishop. Turning right along the canal down Gammel Strand brings you to another statue, The Fisher Woman , commemorating the tough ladies who used to line up along the beachfront here, selling the fish their husbands had caught (the canalside by the statue is now one of the DFDS docking points). From here, there's a fine view across the canal to Slotsholmen, with the brightly coloured Thorvaldsen's Museum standing out next to Christiansborg and Christianborgs Slotkirke, best appreciated during spring and summer from the outside tables of the row of canalside restaurants here, including the popular Thorvaldsens Gourmetbar & Cafe and, a few doors further along, Denmark's oldest and most famous fish restaurant, Krogs . In summer there's a flea market here on Saturdays from 8am to 2pm. Squeezed in between the canalside cafes and restaurants is the impressive Kunstforeningen Gammel Strand exhibition hall (Tues-Sun 11am-5pm; art gallery 30kr, photographic centre 25kr; www.kunstforeningen.dk ), devoted to temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. The Photographic Centre ( www.photography.dk ) on the first floor displays the work of internationally renowned photographers.
