Copenhagen Watersports and Fishing

Watersports and Fishing

With its strong links with the sea, Copenhagen should be an excellent place to indulge in watersports , though unfortunately the waters around the city have more than their fair share of crazed speedboaters and kamikaze jet skiers, a fact which, coupled to a complete absence of policing, makes the whole harbour area feel like an accident waiting to happen. If you're in a small craft such as a kayak or dinghy it's best to go with a guide.

Copenhagen Adventure Tours (Gammel Strand, Indre By, look for the sign, tel 40 50 40 06, www.kajakole.dk ) run excellent and affordable guided kayak tours around the harbour area on safe and easy-to-use individual kayaks. The guides' local knowledge is excellent, and they offer both group and individual tours to set or negotiated time scales - expect to pay 120kr an hour.

The Surf and Snowboard School (June-Oct; tel 32 84 04 53, www.surfsnowboard.dk ) at Amager Beach rents out everything you need for windsurfing , a very popular activity in Denmark; prices start at 80kr per hour for equipment hire, and beginners' lessons are also available.

For diving , head 25km south along the coast to Karlslunde and the exceptionally well equipped Nautic Diving (Mosede Strandvej 51 tel 43 90 02 22, www.nautic-diving.dk ), who run

dozens of courses from PADI to divemaster, rent out equipment to qualified divers and organize wreck diving trips. Prices start at 350kr for equipment rental, a wreck diving trip costs an extra 250kr. If you really want to get out to sea, Baltic, at Lautrupkaj, Osterbro (tel 33 22 00 25; bus #29 or Nordhavn S-Tog) organize day-long fishing trips (150-170kr, tackle 50kr) out into the Oresund - remember to bring warm, waterproof clothing as the weather can be fierce even during summer.
