Daily: May-Sept 9am-5pm, 50kr; Oct-April 10am-4pm, 42kr. Ten minutes' walk north of the cathedral there's another slice of Danish history at the Viking Ship Museum , situated directly on the waterfront of Roskilde Fjord. The museum is split into two parts: workshops in the newer buildings on the left, open during summer, make full-sized working replicas of Viking longboats; the older buildings contain the rather rotten-looking wooden hulls of five Vikings boats - a deep-sea trader, a merchant ship, a man-of-war, a ferry and a longship - each retrieved from the fjord, where, according to one theory, they had been sunk to block invading forces. Together, they give an impressive indication of the Vikings' nautical versatility, their skills in boat-building, and their far-ranging travels to places as various as Paris, Hamburg, and North America. The material here tries hard to convince you that the Vikings sailed abroad not only to rape and pillage, but also to find places where they could quietly settle down and farm. Try to catch the film downstairs first (shown in English on request), which goes into fascinating detail about the project to restore the ships, helping to bring the main exhibits alive. For eating, the Viking Museum cafeteria is one of the best spots in town for a quick and inexpensive bite, while Havne Cafeen at Havne Vej 43, on the waterfront north across the docks from the Viking Museum, has pizza and fish specials from 50kr.
