May-Sept daily 10am-5pm; Oct-April Wed-Fri 1pm-4pm, Sat & Sun 11am-4pm; 30kr. Local train to Rungsted Kyst from Central Station or Nørreport S-Tog and then a fifteen-minute walk. A visit to the Karen Blixen Museum is easily combined with a trip further up the coast to Louisiana and Helsingør, though unless you're a big fan of this writer's work you might find it all a bit underwhelming. While long a household name in Denmark for her short stories (often written under the pen-name of Isak Dinesen) and outspoken opinions, Blixen enjoyed a resurgence of international popularity during the mid-1980s when the film Out of Africa - based on her 1937 autobiographical account of running a coffee plantation in Kenya - won seven Oscars. The museum is set in the Blixen family home, where Karen lived after her return from Africa until her death in 1962, and much of the house is maintained as it was during her final years. Lining the walls are texts describing Blixen's eventful life - her father committed suicide and she married the twin brother of the man she loved, among other things - while exhibits include a collection of first editions and the tiny typewriter she used in Africa, along with audiovisual displays, old radio recordings, some nice furniture and personal effects and temporary exhibitions relating to her life and work. The living quarters (note that you'll only be allowed into this section at the time printed on the back of your ticket) house a small collection of paintings and drawings by Blixen - the smaller room at the back was where she wrote most of her books. You might find the museum's surroundings at least as interesting as the museum itself, facing onto the seafront and backed by delightful woodlands - now a bird sanctuary established by Blixen and also her final resting place; the ticket office can provide a map
