The area around Copenhagen is steeped in history, with a plethora of castles, museums and sites of natural beauty, and with fast public transport links reaching into virtually every corner of Zealand and southern Sweden, there are dozens of possible destinations for day-trips. Heading north up the coast from Copenhagen will take you past the Karen Blixen Museum and the excellent collection of modern art at Louisiana to the town of Helsingør , and its magnificent castle. Nearby is the even grander castle of Frederiksborg at Hillerød, while heading inland brings you to the ancient Danish capital of Roskilde . In summer, bring a picnic or sample the freshly baked goods from local konditoris - many of the places listed here also have fine cafes and restaurants.
