Vor Frelsers Kirke

Daily: April-Aug 11am-4.30pm; Sept-March 11am-3.30pm. Bus #8.

Poking skywards through the trees near the naval museum is the unmistakable blue-and-gold spire of Vor Frelsers Kirke . The spire, with its helter-skelter exterior staircase and large golden globe carrying a three-metre Jesus waving a flag, was added to the otherwise plain church in the mid-eighteenth century, instantly becoming one of the city skyline's most recognizable features - it's said to have been used as a target by Nelson during the English bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807, though fortunately he only managed to hit a leg. Rumour also has it that the spire's architect, Laurids de Thurah, threw himself off the top when he discovered that the stairs wound to the right instead of the left, as the king had requested - although plausible, this is untrue.

To ascend the spire (20kr; note that for safety reasons the spire is closed Nov-March and on wet or windy days) you'll have to climb a total of

400 steps, 150 of them outside, slanted and slippery (especially after rain), and gradually becoming smaller and smaller. The reward for reaching the top is a great view of Copenhagen and beyond. The interior of the building, the largest Baroque church in Copenhagen, is covered in a wealth of incredible detail. Look out for the two large stucco elephants holding a gigantic organ - the animal became the symbol of the nation's highest order, the Order of the Elephant, which still exists today
