Bus #8. The old naval station of Holmen was founded by Frederik III and built on five reclaimed islands. Most of the base was moved elsewhere in the early 1990s, and the islands' many listed buildings now house four art schools, with more planned - check for current developments. There's nothing particular to do, but the old listed buildings and the area as a whole are captivating; there's also a wildly popular and fun restaurant with a military theme, Base Camp Holmen , here as well. At the northern tip of Holmen on the island of Nyholmen, Nyholms Hovedvagt , completed in 1745, is one of Holmen's oldest buildings, with a slightly out-of-proportion tower capped by a huge crown - the Danish flag is still raised and lowered here by the navy every sunrise and sunset. Next door is the Elephanten Dock, constructed on an old ship which was deliberately sunk to establish the foundations of the dock. There's a line of old cannons nearby, and you can walk along the top of the fortifications overlooking Inderhavnen - on a sunny day, the view from here over to mainland Copenhagen and the spires and domes of Frederikstad is incomparable.
