Prague Drinking

Drinking

The choice of Prague cafes is pretty varied - from Art Nouveau relics and swish espresso bars (both of which are called kavarna and are licensed), to simple sugar and caffeine joints ( cukrarna ). For no-nonsense boozing you need to head for a pub ( pivnice ), which invariably serves excellent beer by the half-litre, but many of which close around 11pm. For late-night drinking, head for one of the clubs or all-night bars.

Cafe Slavia , Narodni 1, Nove Mesto. Famous cafe, opposite the National Theatre. Metro Narodni trida.

Dobra cajovna , Borsov 2, Stare Mesto. Buddhist tea house off Karoliny Svetle; no smoking, no alcohol, just chilling out. Metro Staromestska.

Evropa cafe , Vaclavske namesti 25, Nove Mesto. Although now deeply touristy, the Art Nouveau decor is well worth a peek. Metro Mustek.

Jo's Bar , Malostranske namesti 7, Mala Strana. Narrow bar serving hot Tex-Mex food - something of a backpacker institution. Metro Malostranska.

Kavarna Obecni dum , namesti Republiky 5, Nove Mesto. Glorious Art Nouveau decor, impeccable service, good cake trolley and even a few Internet terminals. Metro namesti Republiky.

Louvre , Narodni 20. With high ceiling, mirrors, daily papers and a billiard hall, this first-floor cafe is a fair approximation of a typical Viennese Kaffeehaus . Metro Narodni trida.

Marquis de Sade , Templova 8, Stare Mesto. High ceilings, comfy sofas, dubious live music and crap beer, but a great atmosphere till early in the morning. Metro namesti Republiky.

Molly Malone's , U obecniho dvora 4, Stare Mesto. One of the best of Prague's Irish pubs with an open fire and draught Guinness. Metro Staromestska.

Novomestske pivovar , Vodickova 20, Nove Mesto. Micro-brewery, which serves up its own misty brew along with solid Czech food. Metro Mustek.

Restaurace Pivovarsky dum , Lipova 15, Nove Mesto. In-house brewery offering everything from wheat to banana beer - along with excellent Czech pub grub and good service. Metro I.P. Pavlova.

Terminal Bar , Soukenicka 6, Nove Mesto. Prague's trendiest Internet cafe is also a great place to chill out, especially in the downstairs retro bar. Metro namesti Republiky.

Velryba, Opatovicka 24, Nove Mesto. Smoky and studenty cafe, with cheap Czech food. Metro Narodni trida.
