Practicalities
The tourist office (Mon-Fri 8.30am-5pm; tel 068/551 33 92/85, www.olomoucko.cz ) in the town hall, at Horni nam. 1 to the right of the astronomical clock, will book private rooms for you. Cheap rooms are hard to come by in Olomouc - the only bargain is the Sigma (tel 068/52 32 07 6; GBP10/$16/?18-GBP20/$32/?36), opposite the train station at Jeremenkova 36, or the centrally located pension U Domu garni , Domska 4 (tel 068/522 05 02; GBP15-20/$24-32/?27-36), near the cathedral. Rooms can be even harder to come by in May when the Spring Music Festival follows the Flower Festival. Hostels aren't much of an option either - but you can try Sprava koleji a menz for summer dorm accommodation (tel 068/52 26 05 7). For restaurants , the U cerveneho volka on Dolni namesti is a cheap place with a wide range of veggie dishes, but Caesar Pizzeria in the cobbled vaults under the town hall is by far the most popular joint in town. A good range of cakes can be found in the Maruska cukrarna at 28 rijna or the Cafe Mahler , at Horni namesti 11. In the evenings, head for a backstreet pub like the reasonably priced U bakalare , on Zerotinovo namesti. The Depo no. 8 at namesti Republiky 1, has occasional DJs and bands, as does the U-Klub at the Studentcentrum at the far end of Krizovskeho, and the LTC Club is a cheap, studenty bar at U rozaria 9.
