Brno Arrival and Accommodation

Arrival and Accommodation

Brno's main train station and bus station sit closely together, on the edge of the city centre; the train station has lockers and a 24-hour left-luggage office. Most of Brno's sights are within easy walking distance of the train station, although trams will take you almost anywhere in the city within minutes. You need to buy either a 11kc ticket for half an hour's travel or a 15kc ticket, valid for an hour and allowing changes between trams or buses. Tickets must be bought beforehand from kiosks, hotel lobbies or yellow ticket machines, and validated on board.

The main tourist office is in the Old Town Hall (Stara radnice) at Radnicka 8 (Mon-Fri 8am-6pm, Sat & Sun 9am-5pm; tel 05/42 32 07 58 or 05/42 21 10 90, www.brno.cz ) and there's also a smaller bureau in the train station (tel 05/42 22 14 50) and another in Mendlovo nam (tel 05/43 24 22 36). They can sell you a map and various guides and will also book you a private or hotel room, as will the Synergie Agency (tel 05/43 23 32 72, pselucky@iol.cz ). These days Brno is host to many trade fairs, so it's wise to book ahead. Hostel accommodation is theoretically available all year round, but you're better off trying cheap hotels outside the summer season. However, you'll find summer accommodation in the student dorms at Tauferovy koleje , J. Babaka 3-5 (tel 05/41 32 13 35; under GBP5/$8/?9). One of the cheapest hotels is the Budeet Amphone , Tr. kpt. Jarose 29 (tel 05/45 21 17 83; under GBP5/$8/?9-GBP10/$16/?18). Pegas ,

Jakubska 4 (tel 05/42 21 12 32; GBP20/$32/?36-GBP30/$48/?54), just off Ceska, is rather pricier but central and in a medieval building with its own microbrewery, and U sv Jakuba , on Jakubske namesti 6 (tel 05/42 21 07 95; GBP10-15/$16-24/?18-27) is pretty central and reasonably comfortable. Best of Brno's campsites is the Radka site (tel 05/46 21 58 21; June-Aug; tram #1, #3 or #11), 10km northwest of the city on the shores of the Brno dam, at Brnenska prehrada-kninia.
