Money and Banks
The currency in the Czech Republic is the Czech crown, or koruna ceska (kc), which is divided into one hundred hellers or haler (h). Coins come in 10h, 20h, 50h, 1kc, 2kc, 5kc, 10kc, 20kc and 50kc; notes as 20kc, 50kc, 100kc, 200kc, 500kc, 1000kc, 2000kc and 5000kc. The crown is now fully convertible, though you may find problems getting hold of any in foreign banks. Banks are the best places to change money; they're open Mon-Fri 8am-6pm, although some close early on Fridays. Assistants are generally more helpful and likely to speak English at branches of foreign banks, although charges can be a bit higher. Travellers' cheques in US dollars, Sterling or Deutschmarks are undoubtedly the safest way of carrying money, though it's a good idea to keep some hard currency in cash for emergencies. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels, upmarket restaurants and some shops; you can also use them to get cash from the extensive network of ATMs.
