The big West Bohemian spas - especially Marianske Lazne and Karlovy Vary - were the Cote d'Azur of Habsburg Europe in the nineteenth century, attracting the great names of Mitteleuropa . What was the prerogative of the mega-wealthy became the right of the toiling masses after the postwar nationalization of the entire spa industry enabled every factory worker and trade union member to receive three weeks' annual holiday at a spa pension. Nowadays, the wealthy Germans and Russians are back, though the area has still a long way to go before it catches up with the likes of Baden-Baden.
