Prague is the natural centre and capital of Bohemia; the rest divides easily into four geographical districts. South Bohemia , bordered by the Sumava Mountains, is the least spoilt; its largest town by far is the brewing centre of Ceske Budejovice , and its chief attraction, aside from the thickly forested hills, is a series of well-preserved medieval towns, whose undisputed gem is Cesky Krumlov . Neighbouring West Bohemia has a similar mix of rolling woods and hills, despite the industrial nature of its capital Plzen , home of Pilsen beer and the Skoda empire. Beyond here, as you approach the German border, Bohemia's famous Spa Region unfolds, with magnificent resorts such as Marianske Lazne and Karlovy Vary enjoying sparkling reputations. North Bohemia has real problems: devastated by industrialization, many parts are virtually uninhabitable. East Bohemia has suffered indirectly from the polluting industries of its neighbour, but remains relatively blight-free. There's some great walking and climbing country here, but the only essential stop on a quick tour is the silver-mining centre of Kutna Hora .
