Practicalities

Pula's train station is a ten-minute walk north of the town centre, at the far end of Kolodvorska; the bus station is along Istarska, just south of the amphitheatre. The tourist office , located in the Forum (Jun-Sept daily 9am-10pm; Oct-May Mon-Sat 9am-8pm; tel 052/219-197, www.gradpula.com ), can provide information and useful maps, but does not offer a private room booking service. For this, you need to go to Arenatours, just down from the bus station at Giardini 4 (summer daily 8am-8pm; winter Mon-Fri 8am-5pm; tel 052/218-696, arenaturist@pu.tel.hr ), or head for Istra Way on the seafront at Riva 14 (summer daily 9am-10pm; winter Mon-Fri 9am-4pm, Sat 9am-1pm; tel 052/214-613). Of the hotels , Omir , slightly uphill from Giardini at Sergia Dobrica 6 (tel 052/210-614; GBP15-20/$24-32/?27-36), is small and friendly, but rather plain. Much more comfortable and only slightly more expensive, Scaletta , a stone's throw from the amphitheatre at Flavijevska 26 (tel 052/541-599; GBP20-25/$32-40/?36-45), is one of the best family-run hotels in Croatia. There's also a HI hostel , at Valsaline bay, 4km south of the centre (tel 052/391-133, www.whereisthebeach.com ; GBP5-10/$8-16/?9-18); take bus #2 or #7 from Giardini to Vila Idola and then bear right towards the bay. The nearest campsite is Stoja, on a rocky wooded peninsula 3km southeast of town (tel 052/387-144); take bus #1 from Giardini.

Most eating and drinking venues are concentrated around the arena, Forum and Kandlerova. Delfin , opposite the cathedral at Kandlerova 17, offers inexpensive fish dishes; Jupiter , below the fortress at Castropola 38, is the best of the pizzerias; Pompei , Clarissova 1, does good pasta dishes and salads; while the

restaurant of the Scaletta hotel (see above) is the place to go for expensive seafood. Best of the drinking haunts are Cvajner , a people-watching cafe next to the tourist office; Ulix , an elegant bar next to the triumphal arch; and Bounty Pub , an animated place with plenty of outdoor seating two blocks east of the arch at Veronska 8. In the summer, the amphitheatre is used to stage pop events and world-class opera; details can be obtained from the tourist office.
