Practicalities
Hvar town's tourist office (June-Sept daily 8am-2pm & 4-10pm; Oct-May Mon-Fri 8am-3pm; tel 021/741-059 , www.hvar.hr ) is on the waterfront below the theatre; for assistance in booking private rooms , however, you should head for the Mengola agency, also on the harbour (tel 021/742-099 , www.mengola.hr ); or Pelegrin, by the ferry dock (tel 021/742-250). The local hotels are not cheap, and are often full in July and August. The characterless but acceptable Dalmacija , on the eastern side of the harbour (tel 021/741-120; GBP20-25/$32-40/?36-45), and the Delfin , over on the western side (tel 021/741-168; GBP20-25/$32-40/?36-45), are as reasonable as you'll get. There are dozens of restaurants in Hvar town, none of which are too expensive. Kod Kapetana , next to the Delfin hotel , dishes up splendid seafood, with terrific terrace views to boot; while Hanibal , on the main square, has a slightly pricier, but more wide-ranging menu. Macondo , signposted in a backstreet uphill from the harbour, is another good place for meat and fish. For drinking , there are several cafes and bars around the harbour: Sidro , Atelier and Carpe Diem are three of the best. The Jadrolinija ferry office (tel 021/741-132) is along the quay, opposite the ferry dock.
