Though the largest town on the island of Brac, SUPETAR is a rather sleepy village onto which package tourism has been painlessly grafted. There's little of specific interest, save for several attractive shingle beaches which stretch away westwards from the town's harbour, and the Petrinovic Mausoleum , a neo-Byzantine confection on a wooded promontory 1km west of town, built by sculptor Toma Rosandic to honour a local businessman. Supetar's tourist office beside the ferry dock at Porat 1 (mid-June-mid-Sept daily 8am-10pm; rest of year Mon-Fri 10am-4pm; tel 021/630-551 , www.supetar.hr ) has information on the whole island. Private rooms are available from Supetar Tours (tel 021/630-022) near the bus station, or Atlas (tel 021/631-105) on the harbourfront. There's also the Palute, 1.5km west of the harbour at Put pasike 16 (tel 021/631-541; GBP10-15/$16-24/?18-27), a friendly and agreeable pension offering bed-and-breakfast accommodation. The Hotel Britanida , 200m east of the ferry dock at Hrvatskih velikana 26 (tel 021/631-038; GBP15-20/$24-32/?27-36), is a step up in comfort; but avoid the line of overpriced package hotels behind the beaches. There are two campsites just east of the ferry dock. Best of the places to eat on the harbourfront is Palute at Porat 4, which serves good grilled fish. Vinotoka , just inland from the harbour at Dobova 6, has a wide range of traditional Croatian food and an extensive choice of local wines. The clear waters around Supetar are perfect for scuba diving ; the Dive Center Kaktus in the Kaktus Hotel complex (tel 021/630-421; April-Oct) rents out gear and arranges scuba and snorkelling crash courses from around 200kn, as well as renting out mountain bikes. Ferry tickets can be purchased from the Jadrolinija office inside the bus station.
