One way to escape Bol's crowds is to make for the hermitage of Blaca , tucked away at the head of a valley about 12km to the west of the town. You can walk there by following the road, subsequently a track, which heads west from Bol, before heading inland at Blaca bay - the route is well signposted, but the trip takes three hours each way. If you have your own transport on the other hand, follow the signposted track (just about passable for cars, but rough on the suspension) which leaves the main road from Bol to Supetar. At the track's end, head on foot along the path downhill, which leads to the monastery in about forty minutes. The hermitage (Tues-Sun 10am-5pm, but check in the tourist office at Bol or Supetar as times can vary; 10kn) was founded in 1588 by monks fleeing the Turks; the last resident was an enthusiastic astronomer who left all sorts of bits and bobs, including an assortment of old clocks and a stock of lithographs by Poussin. But the principal attraction is the hermitage's setting, hugging the sides of a narrow, scrub-covered ravine.
