The white Lyutov House (Tues-Sun 9.30am-5.30pm) is distinguished by its double staircase and yoke-shaped porch, which is decorated on one side with a small lion breaking free of its chains, signifying Bulgarian aspirations of freedom. Built for a wealthy yoghurt merchant by Plovdiv craftsmen in 1854, the house, boasting one of Koprivshtitsa's most sumptuous interiors, is famed for its wealth of murals: palaces, temples and world cities splashed across the walls and alafranga ; wreaths, blossoms and nosegays in the Blue Room; and oval medallions adorning the ceilings. The house also holds a fine collection of Viennese furniture, while a splendid rosewater fountain forms the centrepiece of the extravagant parlour. The basement houses an exhibition of plasti , the locally made felt rugs which traditionally feature bold, sun-symbol designs. Nearer the river stands a handsome pair of civic buildings, financed by local patriots. The former Village School , built in 1837 - the school where the great educational reformer Neofit Rilski taught and to which rich merchant families from all over Bulgaria sent their children - is now a conference and exhibition centre, while the nearby Narodno chitalishte , founded in 1869 as public reading rooms, played a big part in the National Revival, spreading literacy and nurturing a sense of national identity in towns and villages.
