Practicalities
Dupnitsa's train station is about fifteen minutes' walk from the centre, while the bus station lurks a block or so off the main square. There are currently two buses a day directly to Rila Monastery and another one or two to Rila village, where you can pick up an onward service. Avoid having to stay the night in Dupnitsa, as the Rila hotel (tel 0701/25015; US$9-18) by the main square is decrepit, depressing, and prone to hot water shortages. The usual smattering of cafes adds a vivacity of sorts to the pedestrianized streets leading off the main square, and there's a nice restaurant , the Panorama , in the hilltop park overlooking the square.
