The lower reaches of the Struma Valley are borderlands in all but name, with streams of trucks converging on the crossing into Greece at KULATA , which has a motel and all-year campsite but little else to detain you from heading straight for the 24-hour checkpoint. The other, more tenuous flow of traffic is southwest towards Petrich - the only town in the region - and the ZLATAREVO crossing into the Republic of Macedonia . However, unless you have a car, it's far easier to enter either country on a bus from Sofia or Blagoevgrad than it is to cross over from Kulata or Petrich - so there's little necessity to visit either. That said, it's hard to resist the supernatural hype of Rupite - a New Age pilgrimage spot as well as a Christian one - and the incongruous gangster heritage of laid-back, sleepy Petrich might appeal to some.
