Three blocks south of bul. Tsar Osvoboditel, on the corner of ul. Rakovski and ul. Vazov, is the Ivan Vazov House-Museum (Tues & Sun 1-7pm, Thurs1-5pm, Fri & Sat 9am-5pm), where Bulgaria's greatest novelist lived from 1895 until his death in 1921. Most of the rooms are decked out in early nineteenth-century wallpaper and traditional Bulgarian floor coverings, making this one of the few places in town where the atmosphere of the old, post-Liberation Sofia still reigns. Downstairs a words-and-pictures display details the main events of Vazov's life, from childhood in Sopot through exile in Odessa (where he wrote Under the Yoke , the epic novel of nineteenth-century Bulgarian life) to old age in Sofia: the dining room where he suffered a fatal heart attack is preserved in its original state. Period rooms upstairs include the writer's study, where visitors are greeted by the stuffed remains of Vazov's beloved dog, Bobi. The unfortunate hound was run over by a tram just outside the house before being whisked off to the taxidermist by Vazov's youngest brother Boris.
