Ploshtad Sveta Nedelya - Sveta Nedelya square - is Sofia's hub, straddling the capital's principal north-south and east-west thoroughfares and providing easy access to the main business and sightseeing districts - such as they are. Until recently the square carried the name of Lenin, whose huge statue dominated the southern end until it was demolished in 1990. With his removal, the central focus of the square has returned northward to the church after which it was originally named. The square elongates to join bul. Vitosha , the city's main shopping street, to the south, while to the north the Balkan Sheraton hotel and the Tzum shopping mall guard the entrance to the broad street-cum-square known as the Largo , main route to the tourist attractions of east central Sofia. On the far side of the Largo, bul. Knyaginya Mariya Luiza heads north towards the main train station, passing the city's principal mosque, synagogue and public bath buildings on the way.
