From Sofia's Ovcha Kupel bus station, buses #61 and #62 ascend through the forests that cloak the western shoulder of Vitosha. Bus #62 forks left to wind its way up to the Kopitoto area on a spur of the mountain, where there's a TV mast, a hotel-restaurant and numerous woodland walks, while bus #61 carries on to ZLATNI MOSTOVE ("golden bridges"). This area of mixed deciduous and evergreen forest is centred around the so-called Stone River , a ribbon of huge boulders running down the mountainside that was once the moraine of an ancient glacier. Beneath the boulders burbles a rivulet that used to attract gold-panners, hence the locality's name. Tracks lead from the bus stop in all directions, past trade union-owned rest homes and small shacks selling drinks and snacks. The most popular walking route is a well-signed, medium-difficulty ascent of Cherni Vrah, taking 2-3 hours. The path leads up the side of the Stone River, passing the Kumata and Konyarnika huts before emerging above the treeline onto the grassy mountain top.
