Getting To Vitosha
Public transport to Mt Vitosha is fairly straightforward, with buses for Dragalevtsi, Simeonovo and Aleko starting from the Hladilnika terminus on Sofia's southern outskirts, at the end of tram routes #9 and #12. After disembarking from the tram, head through a small bazaar area and turn left: buses for Vitosha destinations depart from stands 300m away at the end of the street. You can take bus #66 straight to Aleko or head instead for the Aleko-bound lifts at Dragalevtsi and Simeonovo. Which one you choose will largely depend on what day it is: both the Dragalevtsi chair lift and Simeonovo gondola only definitely work at weekends and during school holidays, and can't be relied upon the rest of the time. In addition, they're usually closed for maintenance in May and October. From the Hladilnika terminus, bus #64 goes to Dragalevtsi village then Boyana Church every 20-30 minutes; bus #66 goes to Aleko approximately every 30 minutes; bus #93 goes to the Dragalevtsi chair lift every 30 minutes, but only when the chair lift is running; bus #98 goes to Dragalevtsi village and Simeonovo village every 20-30 minutes; and bus #122 goes to the Simeonovo gondola every 30-40 minutes, but only when the gondola is running. Buses for Zlatni Mostove leave from the Ovcha Kupel bus station southwest of the city centre, on the main road to Pernik, Blagoevgrad and Greece. To get there, take tram #5 from behind the National History Museum (also known as Palace of Justice or Sadebna Palata ) and travel eleven stops until you see the grubby concrete bus station buildings on your right. From here, bus #61 goes to Zlatni Mostove (Mon-Sat 7 daily; Sun every 30min), and bus #62 goes to Kopitoto (Mon-Sat 3 daily; Sun roughly hourly). In addition, you can get to Simeonovo village on bus #67 (every 20-30 minutes) from pl. Velchova Zavera (on tram routes #2, #12 and #19). As a rule, there are more buses to Vitosha on Sundays than on other days of the week, especially if you're aiming for Zlatni Mostove. Journey times from Sofia to any of the Mount Vitosha destinations take between 30 minutes and an hour, depending on the traffic and weather conditions. Sofia public transport tickets and travelcards are valid for all the above services except for buses #61, #62 and #66, for which seperate tickets must be bought from kiosks at the relevant terminals.
