On the north side of pl. Sveta Nedelya, a major crossroads marks the beginning of the Largo , traditionally one of the major showpieces of postwar Sofia, not least because of the political symbolism embodied in its most imposing edifice: the Communist Party headquarters. Flanked on three sides by severely monumental buildings, this elongated plaza was built on the ruins of central Sofia, which had been pulverized by British and American bombers in the autumn of 1944. Its yellow-painted stones are the start of a kilometre-long stretch of bright yellow cobbles which, leading through pl. Aleksandar Batenberg and along bul. Tsar Osvoboditel, forms a kind of processional way linking many of the capital's key sights. The Largo's western side, from where the dead-straight bul. Todor Aleksandrov blazes a trail towards the distant suburbs, was once dominated by a gargantuan statue of V.I. Lenin. Its place has now been filled by a lofty pedestal topped by a be-robed female figure, who presides over the busy streets like some celestial traffic warden. Intended as an allegory of wisdom (the city itself got its name from an old church dedicated to Sveta Sofia or "Holy Wisdom"), the statue was erected in 2000 to serve as a new, non-ideological symbol of the post-communist capital.
