Bulevard Tsar Osvoboditel heads out of pl. Aleksandar Batenberg's eastern end, an attractive thoroughfare partially lined with chestnut trees. The Natural Science Museum , at no. 1 (daily 10am-6pm; US$1), was founded in 1889 by Knyaz Ferdinand I, himself a keen butterfly collector, and presents a thorough cataloguing of Bulgarian and worldwide wildlife, both stuffed and pickled. Tanks containing live snakes and lizards line the stairs, domestic grass snakes vying for attention with central American geckos, pythons and anacondas. At teatime, live rodents are lowered into the tanks of the larger reptiles. There's also a small gift shop selling minerals and fossils. Immediately beyond the museum, the Russian church is an unmistakable, zany firecracker of a building with an exuberant exterior of bright yellow tiles, five gilded domes and an emerald spire, concealing a dark, candlewax-scented interior. Officially dedicated to St Nicholas the Blessed, the church was built in 1913 at the behest of a Tsarist diplomat, Semontovski-Kurilo, who feared for his soul to worship in Bulgarian churches, which he believed to be schismatic.
