Founded by the seventeenth-century Turkish general Kardzhi Ali on the site of a much older settlement, KARDZHALI was one of the last towns to remain in Ottoman hands - old photos and paintings of the town depict a maze of lanes thronged with hawkers in fezzes, veils and pantaloons, mingling with Bulgarian peasants, brigands and Turkish officers. When it finally fell to the Bulgarian army in 1912, however, it had fewer than 3000 inhabitants, and only a trace of its erstwhile exoticism lingers in the bazaar quarter today. Other than to visit the excellent Historical Museum, there are few reasons to spend more than an afternoon before moving on. However, for those with a car, it can serve as a base for trips to numerous rock formations - the nearest is 4km from town - or a stopover en route to the nature reserve at Madzharovo.
