The northernmost spurs of the Rhodopes rear up from the plain barely 10km south of Plovdiv, with numerous minor roads running up the narrow valleys of the streams that gush down to feed the Maritsa. The main route south, however, into the central Rhodopes starts beyond the town of Asenovgrad , and follows the ruggedly beautiful valley of the River Chepelarska past the historic Bachkovo Monastery up to the ski resorts of Chepelare and Pamporovo , before descending to Smolyan . This road is well served by bus, unlike those in other parts of the highlands, where you need a car to get around or enough time to go walking. The scenery in this region is magnificent and there are enough villages offering accommodation to support all kinds of hikes around Mostovo, Manastir and Progled .
