Bulgaria's museums and art galleries were quite well provided for by a postwar state eager to instil in its inhabitants a strong sense of history and a pride in national culture. Civic pride comes into it too: every town in the country was determined to display at least some evidence of

its contribution to Bulgarian history, whether in the shape of a small archeological museum, a restored nineteenth-century house, or the former home of a famous revolutionary. Religious monuments fared less well: while the most prestigious of them were paraded as examples of Bulgarian achievement, the vast majority were allowed to fall into neglect and disuse. Since 1989, however, Orthodox and Muslim communities have spent a lot of money on returning churches and mosques to their former glory
