Sveti Konstantin (Druzhba)

Immediately beyond Evksinograd, suburban Varna fades imperceptibly into the first of the great tourist complexes built in the postwar drive to develop the coast. Originally named "Druzhba" ("friendship"), SVETI KONSTANTIN (bus #8 from in front of the Cathedral) first admitted Western tourists in 1955, and has since served as a prototype for others. The elite trade union rest-homes which used to grace the northern end of Sveti Konstantin are now hotels operating under the banner of the Sunny Day ( Slanchev Den ) resort, which has its own beach, but to all intents and purposes is still part of Sveti Konstantin. Taken together, Sveti Konstantin and Sunny Day are still quite small compared with the mega-resorts of Golden Sands and Albena further north, so there's less in the way of things to do - although the centre of Varna is only 12km away.

The resort has a park-like cosiness, with an abundance of oaks and cypresses, and a number of small beaches and coves. On the downside, it's not the best

managed of places, being poorly lit at night and overrun by stray dogs. The emergence of several small family-run hotels on the western fringes of the resort has meant that there's more scope for independent travellers here than previously, and the Swedish-built Grand Hotel Varna in the centre of Sveti Konstantin is still one of the city's better business hotels. Food and drink in the resort's numerous cafe-restaurants tends towards the bland, and is more expensive than in central Varna.
