Arrival, Information and City Transport
Varna's train station is just south of the centre, a ten-minute walk up ul. Tsar Simeon into town. The bus terminal is 2km northwest on bul. Vl. Varnenchik; take bus #22 or #41 from here to reach the streets surrounding the central Cathedral of the Assumption (an area known as Tsentar or "centre" on bus destination boards), a few paces north of the main downtown area. Varna airport , on the city's western outskirts, is served by bus #409, which passes through central Varna before continuing on past Sveti Konstantin to Golden Sands. Central Varna is easy to explore on foot, although local buses and trolley-buses come in handy if you're heading for the suburbs or the seaside resorts to the north - most stop either in front of or behind the Cathedral. Tickets are bought from the conductor, with a flat fare of 40st (US$0.20) covering most central city destinations. Up-to-date maps which include bus routes are available from the CM92 agency on Tsar Simeon and, sporadically, from street stalls. Buses run from around 6.30am to 11.30pm, although services to the northern beach resorts stop at around 10pm. Taxis leave from in front of the train station, and can also be found around the junction of bul. Knyaz Boris I and Slivnitsa. However, the meters on these vehicles are rarely working, so unless you can negotiate a reasonable price in advance, it's worth looking beyond these prime rip-off spots for your cab ride.
