Old Town

The Old Town begins beyond the post office, where three cobbled roads thrust into a labyrinth of alleys and vine-shaded houses and tourists are ambushed by old ladies brandishing lace tablecloths for sale. The best examples of traditional architecture lie towards the head of the peninsula along ul. Apoloniya and ul. Kiril i Metodii. In winter, boats and fishing tackle are kept inside the stone lower storeys; families occupy the creaking wooden rooms upstairs, which extend so far out that they threaten to touch the houses on the other side of the street. Some of their eaves are carved with suns or fish, for good luck.

Several shed-like paraklisi or chapels can be found scattered throughout the old town, usually bare inside save for a picture of the saint to whom they're dedicated. Despite its central location, it can be difficult to find the Church of Sveta Bogoroditsa (July & Aug only; check hours at the Archeological Museum), hidden within a walled courtyard on ul. Anaksimandar. Inside the nave are a finely carved iconostasis and bishop's throne - both executed by anonymous local masters in the early 1800s - and a wooden screen behind which female worshippers were required to stand. Surrounded by noisy bars and cafes just south of here, the Church of Sveti Georgi , on ul. Apoloniya, offers at least some respite from the general hubub and holiday crowds, and is open year-round. It houses a colourful nineteenth-century iconostasis, including an arresting image of the Archangel Michael trampling a

sinner.

Sozopol's former high school at the far end of ul. Kiril i Metodii now contains an Art Gallery (Tues-Sun 8am-noon & 2-6pm), although most of the works on the ground floor look like the daubs dashed off by holidaying artists between drinking bouts at the local mehana . Things are more interesting upstairs, where works by local marine artists Aleksandar Mutafov and Yani Chrisoupolis document pre-World War II Sozopol and the working lives of its fisherfolk.
