A minor road leaves the E87 at Staro Oryahovo for SHKORPILOVTSI , 8km away on the coast. A modest resort with a dune beach and two campsites , Izgrev and Horizont , the town was named after the Czech Skorpil brothers who "founded" Bulgarian archeology in the late nineteenth century. Karel and Herman Skorpil came to Varna in 1882 and immediately began sorting out and cataloguing the region's antiquities, a collection that formed the basis of the Varna History Museum. They were pioneers in the field of medieval Bulgarian archeology too, and Karel was honoured by being buried among the ruins of the medieval capital Pliska.
