Although there's no direct rail link along the coast it is possible to travel from Varna to Burgas by train: a time-consuming inland journey, usually involving at least one change. It's far better, however, to take one of the regular buses running south of Varna along the E87 highway, a road that winds its way across the coastal hills, occasionally offering glimpses of the sea. Ultimately you hit the mega-resort of Sunny Beach some 100km to the south, but the towns you pass along the way are among the quietest of the Black Sea coast. They're seldom visited by anybody but Bulgarians, and some are visibly suffering from the decline in the cheap-and-cheerful Eastern European tourism of the Communist era. You'll find a scattering of campsites, and plenty of families offering rooms , but the kvartirno byuro s that used to handle them are thin on the ground - be prepared to ask around.
