South of Sozopol , the coast offers some of Bulgaria's most glorious stretches of sandy beaches . A whole string of semi-deserted beaches are punctuated by areas of coastal wetland, notably the lush woodlands around the estuary of the River Ropotamo , while the sandy soil of the coastal hills provides a tenuous base for prickly conifers. Hugging the Turkish border just west of the coast are the mountains of the Strandzha , covered by Bulgaria's deepest and least-explored forests . Other than the Dyuni Holiday Village , the resorts along this stretch of the Black Sea were largely frequented by Eastern bloc tourists in the past, and now depend on Bulgarians for custom. If you don't mind the absence of other foreigners or the lack of nightlife, quiet seaside towns like Primorsko, Kiten and Ahtopol offer inexpensive lodgings and proximity to a beach (the size and quality of which vary). Beyond Ahtopol a lonely coast road continues to Sinemorets , a middle-of-nowhere village whose stunning beaches deserve a place on the itinerary of every self-respecting Black Sea traveller. Those with private transport can cruise the area and pick their ideal bathing spot; travellers reliant on local buses will have to time things carefully. There are six buses a day between Sozopol and Tsarevo, calling at Kavatsite, Dyuni, Ropotamo, Primorsko and Kiten; two of them continue on to Ahtopol. In high season, services fill up quickly and drivers won't stop to pick up travellers at roadside halts if the vehicle is already packed. In addition, private minibuses zoom down the stretch of coast between Burgas and Tsarevo, although they're unlikely to call in at Sozopol en route.
