Just beyond the northern end of Golden Sands, KRANEVO is a rapidly expanding village sitting at the southern tip of a glorious curve of beach which extends onwards towards the mega-resort of Albena, some 4km distant. Kranevo's growing number of private rooms and family-run hotels make it a useful budget alternative to its more package-oriented neighbour, although there is very little here in the way of sights or entertainment, and construction work is ongoing: you can walk along the sands to Albena if you fancy using the facilities there. The main E87 coastal road forges through the eastern fringes of Kranevo, and it's here that Varna-Albena and Varna-Balchik buses pick up and drop off. A 1km walk downhill brings you to what passes for the village centre, a parade of hastily constructed cafes and restaurants leading down towards the beach . Rooms are available from the Ekrene-96 bureau in the centre (open June-August daily approx 8am-dusk; be prepared to ask around outside these times), with prices ranging from US$7 to US$15 per person depending on proximity to the shore. One of the best hotels is the Apolon , on the main road near the southern entrance to the village (tel 0579/66646; US$18-36), which offers comfy, characterful ensuite rooms with TV and telephone. A cheaper option is the two-star Magya (tel 0579/66412; US$9-18), close to the beach. Both have good restaurants , although there are plenty of places offering grilled fish in the village centre. Food and drink in Kranevo is significantly cheaper than in neighbouring Albena up the road.
