Burgas The Burgas Lakes

The Burgas Lakes

Midway between Pomorie and Burgas the road passes Atanasovsko ezero , the largest and most ecologically important wetland reserve in Bulgaria. This ten-kilometre-long stretch of shallow inland water is frequented by more than 300 species of birds - representing nearly three-quarters of the country's total - including such rare visitors as the Dalmatian pelican, corncrake and pygmy cormorant, as well as thousands of more common birds such as the sandwich tern. The lake serves as the midway point on the "Via Pontica" - the route used by birds migrating between Scandinavia and Africa - and tens of thousands of white storks have been recorded circling the area on their way south. Plant life is equally varied and abundant, while Europe's smallest mammal, the Etruscan shrew, also makes its home here. Immediately west of Burgas is Burgasko ezero , which has been transformed over recent years from an almost hopelessly polluted body of water into an important nature reserve, and a protected breeding site for night herons, squacco herons and little egrets. Just south of here is the final major

reserve, Poda Lagoon , where you'll find the only colony of spoonbills on the Black Sea coast, which nest here between May and June.

The Poda Information and Visitors Centre (tel 056/35956, bspbpoda@mobikom.com ), at the edge of the lagoon, is open daily, and arranges tours of the site.
