Practicalities
As with most towns in this corner of Bulgaria, the choice of accommodation on offer is pretty modest. The two-star, hundred-room Valdi Palace (tel 092/61649; US$36-60) is conveniently located on the central square, pl. Hristo Botev, although its run-down ensuite rooms aren't as good value as those at the Hotel Tourist , a couple of blocks west of the centre on pl. Cherven (tel 092/61528 or 62095), which has plain but acceptable ensuite doubles (US$18-36), or renovated doubles with cable TV (US$36-60). There are dorm beds available for US$4 a night at the Alpiiski Dom (tel 092/23006), 2km west of town in the Vratsata Gorge, although it has unpredictable opening times (sometimes summer-only) and is often fully booked by groups of rock climbers. The numerous pavement cafes that line the central bul. Hristo Botev make Vratsa an invigorating place to be on a warm summer's day, although there's little to choose between them. If you don't fancy eating in the Valdi Palace, Mehana Balkan , behind ul. Botev on ul. Stefanaki Savov, is the town's nicest restaurant , with a pleasant outdoor garden in summer.
