Practicalities
Berkovitsa's train station is fifteen minutes' walk east of town at the end of ul. Atanas Kyorkchiev, while the bus station lies on the eastern fringe of the town centre on ul. Brezi. Accommodation is limited to the concrete high-rise Ucheben Tsentar Ashiklar , ul. Ashiklar 16 (tel 0953/3000 or 3120; US$9-18), which has ensuite two- and three-bed rooms, as well as good-value top-floor apartments with TV and sitting room (US$18-36). The best of several town-centre cafes is Cafe Dame just down from the main square on Aleksandrovska. For restaurants try the Krasteva Kashta , an atmospheric nineteenth-century house on ul. Sheinovo. There's a big Saturday-morning market next to the bus station, selling clothes, bric-a-brac and crafts.
