Iskar Gorge Walks Around Gara Lakatnik

Walks Around Gara Lakatnik

GARA LAKATNIK (literally "Lakatnik Station") stands astride some promising Iskar Gorge walking trails, the most popular of which snake their way up the Lakatnishki skali , a precipitous knuckle of rock just north of the station on the west side of the valley. To get there, walk downhill from the station, cross the river, turn right onto the main road and walk straight on for about 1500m. Footpaths ascend the side of the cliff from beside a small (and sporadically open) roadside cafe-restaurant, working their way past two dupki or caves before emerging onto the grassy uplands at the top of the skali . Temnata dupka is the larger of the two caves here, extending for nearly 3km across four levels and including several lakes fed by a subterranean river. However, it's doubtful that anyone will be on hand to offer tours to casual visitors. An alternative route into the hills is to head south along the main road from the station, turning right after about 1km onto a minor road which heads up beside the Proboinitsa stream. After about 1500m, beyond a small bridge, a path heads up the small side valley to the right, passing several waterfalls and pools before leading on to the meadowy plateau above the skali . Keeping to the main Proboinitsa valley road, on the other hand, will bring you after 10km to the Proboinitsa hizha , base camp for assaults on the

1785-metre-high Todorini kukli , from where paths descend to the Petrohan Pass on the other side. South of Gara Lakatnik, a more serviceable road heads for the pastoral highland village of Lakatnik itself, 8km away, and beyond that, the Trastena hut, again the start of numerous walking possibilities. Bear in mind, however, that the cafe and food store on the station platform at Gara Lakatnik are the only reliable places in the area to pick up food supplies.

Lakatnik Hiking Maps

Michael says "I collected some maps that cover the area of Vratshanski Balkan, Iskar Gorge and Lakatnik on my web-site (www.michael-rosemann.de/Lakatnik/Lakatnik.html)
Also, you will find there an updated timetable of the trains that serve Lakatnik.
I hope it will attract more people to this lovely place.
