Sveta Gora (Holy Hill), on the south bank of the Yantra, used to be a centre of monastic scholasticism, and nowadays provides the site for the Cyril and Methodius University , which can be reached via a bridge to the south of Tsarevets, or on bus #15. The rocky spur, linked by footbridge to the Hotel Veliko Tarnovo , is adorned with an obelisk commemorating the 800th anniversary of the foundation of the Asenid dynasty, but visitors are generally more interested in the contents of the large, copper-roofed art gallery nearby (Mon-Fri 10am-6pm; US$1.50), whose theme is "Tarnovo through the eyes of diverse painters". A jumble of unchallenging townscapes and lionizations of medieval tsars for the most part, the collection is enlivened by a couple of naive exercises in mid-nineteenth-century portraiture by local artists Nikolai Pavlovich and Georgi Danchov.
