Steps to the right of the National Revival Museum lead down to the Archeology Museum (closed indefinitely at the time of writing), whose collection includes various artefacts culled from the Roman city of Nicopoils ad Istrum, 17km north of Tarnovo, founded by Emperor Trajan in 107 to serve as an administrative centre for the Roman Empire's lower Danubian province, Moesia Inferior. Around the corner and lower down the hill, a former Turkish prison now holds the Museum of Modern History (Mon-Fri 8am-noon & 1-5pm; free), which contains a few personal effects of Tarnovo-born politician Stefan Stambolov, an autocratic prime minister who was assassinated by disgruntled Macedonians in 1895, alongside photographs, drawings, military uniforms and firearms recalling the Balkan Wars and the First World War. Above the square, the modern Cathedral of Sveta Bogoroditsa stands aloof on a terrace. From here, either ul. Ivan Vazov or Nikola Pikolo leads directly down to the entrance of Tsarevets, the medieval fortress.
