Tarnovo''s Uprisings
The Ottoman-ruled city of Tarnovo played host to three proudly remembered uprisings . The first came in 1598, when locals aided by Dubrovnik merchant Pavel Dzaordzaic rose up in the mistaken belief that the Austrian Emperor Rudolf II had promised to send military help. The second, in 1688, came about when Polish victories against the Turks once again persuaded Tarnovo's charshiya that foreign armies were preparing to ride to their aid. Local noble Rostislav Stratsimirovich, a direct descendant of Tsar Ivan Stratsimir, was declared Prince of Bulgaria, then forced to flee by the Ottomans, who set fire to the town in retribution. The third, known as Velchova Zavera or "Velcho's plot", came in 1835, when glass merchant Velcho Atanasov Dzhamdzhiyata hatched the hair-brained scheme of laying siege to the fortress of Varna in the hope of encouraging Russian intervention. Unsurprisingly, the conspirators were captured and hanged.
