Arrival
All trains between Sofia and Varna stop at Gorna Oryahovitsa to the north, from where eight local trains a day cover the remaining 13km to Veliko Tarnovo. In the middle of the day there's a large gap between services, so you can save time by hopping on the shuttle bus to Gorna Oryahovitsa's bus terminal, from where there's a connection every fifteen minutes (#10 or #14) to Veliko Tarnovo. Tarnovo's train station , on the Stara Zagora-Ruse line, is 2km south of the centre - buses #4 and #13 (from the bus stop nearest to the station building) run to the main thoroughfare, bul. Levski. If you don't mind a fifteen-minute uphill walk, turn left out of the station yard and keep bearing left until you reach the centre. The bus terminal is southwest of town at the end of Nikola Gabrovski: take bus #12 or trolleybuses #1 and #21 to reach the centre. Privately operated bus services from Sofia and the coast pick up and drop off outside the Hotel Etar .
