Most of the northern end of town is modern, although the birthplace of Angel Kanchev at ul. Angel Kanchev 39 (Tues-Sat: summer 9am-1pm & 2-6pm; winter 8am-noon & 1-5pm; US$1) is a prime example of the nineteenth-century Tryavna housebuilder's art. Most of it was the work of Kanchev's father, Kancho Angelov Popnikolov, his skilled handiwork revealed in details such as the wooden panels and fitted cupboards lining many of the rooms. Disappointingly, though, only a couple of sparsely furnished upstairs rooms are on show, together with a tiny words-and-photos exhibition on the ground floor. Born in 1850, Kanchev's patriotism led him to join Belgrade's Artillery School at the age of seventeen, and later spurn a lucrative job offer to work for Bulgaria's liberation. Sent to assist Levski in constructing the revolutionary underground, Kanchev had completed two clandestine "tours" by 1872, when he was caught boarding a steamer at Ruse without a passport. Fearful of betraying secrets under torture, he shot himself, crying "Long live Bulgaria!" - in Levski's words, "the most honourable death for justice that should be considered sweetest for every proud Bulgarian of today".
