Seven kilometres to the east of Kilifarevo, in a wooded valley near the commune of Plakovo, lies another monastery, whose superior, Father Sergius, was involved in "Velcho's plot" and tortured to death by the Turks after its discovery. A plaque on the stone fountain in the courtyard of Plakovo Monastery commemorates him and his fellow conspirators. Some of the Tarnovo-Kilifarevo buses continue on to Plakovo; check in Kilifarevo which ones. Tracks continue 2km beyond Plakovo Monastery to the more impressive Kapinovo Monastery , where the timber verandahs of the monks' cells overlook a courtyard shaded by vines. Sofronii Vrachanski was head monk here before being elevated to the bishopric of Vratsa in 1794, putting the monastery at the forefront of the revival of Bulgarian language and scholarship. The monastery church contains an unmissable Day of Judgement painted by Razgrad master Yovan Popovich in 1845, with lurid scenes of the dead emerging from their graves.
